Will sleep apnea go away without treatment?

Want to know whether sleep apnea will go away all by itself? The answer is no, it will not. Sleep apnea is an ongoing condition that can become chronic. This means the longer someone is suffering from this sleeping condition, the higher their risk of experiencing few or many damaging effects to their body. While many times these damaging health effects are directly related to their body, it can also negatively affect their mental health.

There are few different types of sleep apnea treatments available nowadays, including using one of the different types of oral appliances, including mouth guards, undergoing one or more behavioral treatments, using a CPAP machine to benefit from positive airway pressure therapy and as a last option, undergoing one of the surgical processes currently in place.

Types of sleep apnea

There are two types of sleep apnea – obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is a term used when someone does not have a sufficient amount of air flowing in or out of their nose or mouth, even when they are trying to breathe. Within this category of sleep apnea, there are three different levels of severity: mild, moderate and severe. These levels are determined by how many breathing pauses someone has per hour while sleeping.

Central sleep apnea is a term used when someone has a case of sleep apnea that prevents their brain from sending the right signals to their body's muscles that allow them to properly breathe. While this type of sleep apnea is less common than the obstructive version, it is a more serious version.

How sleep apnea can affect one’s overall health

When someone is living with sleep apnea and does not seek treatment, it will sooner or later negatively affect their overall health. Some of the more common health problems someone can be diagnosed with that is directly related to their sleep apnea problems include being diagnosed with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, sexual dysfunction and suffering from a stroke.

When it comes to mental-related problems, sleep apnea sufferers may experience depression, anxiety, dementia, a lack of concentration, a lack of memory and an overall feeling of being able to control one’s emotions.
