Fillings are usually necessary because the tooth has decay or erosion from wear and/ or diet. It can also can be because you have chipped a tooth. If it is due to decay, the doctor removes all of the decay, and places either an amalgam (silver) or composite (white) filling material. A bonding is usually a term used when it is due to erosion or chipping and composite material is used. If a tooth has a filling or fracture that is to large for a filling, a crown is usually recommended.
